Shared Accommodation

If you share accommodation you may have problems getting home insurance. This is largely because most home insurance policies are designed for a family/couple living in a property that they either own or rent. When you share a property typically you will not own the building, so therefore you wont need any buildings insurance - just home contents insurance, but this is where problems arise with many policies.

For example:

If X lives with Y in a house and all their possessions are mixed in (one owns a TV and the other owns the washing machine, for example), if X takes out contents insurance and both the TV and washing machine are stolen then the insurance company shouldn't reimburse X for property that wasn't theirs (and therefore the claimant would be placed in a better position as a result of the theft than they were beforehand). As it would be impossible for the insurance company to determine whose home contents was whose they wouldn't be able to cover the property.

The situation is different if you have your own room in a shared house, typically defined by home insurance companies as having it's own lockable door and being under your sole control. If you have your own lockable room (making sure you meet the home insurance company's security requirements (in the case of Home-cover.com this means a five lever mortice deadlock), then you can normally arrange insurance for the contents of this room. These policies usually have quite a low sum insured limit, and the cover is designed to insure your clothes, TV, stereo and computer. Sums insured for this type of cover would normally fall well below the minimum level we are able to offer from Home-cover.com (our minimum sum insured for home insurance is £15,000), but given that our rates can be excellent, it is well worth getting a quote from us on £15,000 of cover, you may be pleasantly surprised at the prices.
